How Cool Would It Be?

Just a quick post before bed.

I think New Balance really hit something here. How cool would it be if events like the ones in this commercial actually happened. I really think simple and fun changes to the way meets are put on could really boost a) the fan base and b) the amount of income they bring in. I had friends go down and compete at the Millrose Games this year and they old me there were bands playing and just things going on besides just races. They really made it into a full on performance. Things such as getting bands to perform between races, having races that get the crowds involved and things of that nature would really go a long way for our sport. They could have a contest for a regular Joe Nobody to step on the track and race a big name in track. Give the guy or girl some free shoes, shorts, and a singlet and have the Joe do 400m while the Pro does 600m or something. I understand it couldn't happen at ALL meets since the big names need to race, but maybe do it as a press stunt the day before or something like that.

I also think rivalries, whether real or media created, would be great. Always have everyone looking out for when "A" and "B" race each other. Have runner's names become household names.

Anyway, may be wishful thinking, but those are just my half-asleep thoughts. Hill workout in the AM, I need sleep.
